Prof. Emer. Shimon Friedman

Prof. Shimon Friedman acquired his DMD degree from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel in 1975. He spent his entire professional career as an educator in Endodontics which began as an instructor in the department of Periodontics and Endodontics at the Hebrew University. In 1992, he joined the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Toronto, Canada, as an Associate Professor and Head of its Department of Endodontics. He also served as the Director of the MSc Program in Endodontics in the same University from 1993 to 2015. He is a Diplomate of the Israel Board of Endodontics, Former Chairman of the Israel Endodontic Society, Member and Examiner of the Israel Board of Endodontics and sat in the Editorial Board of several international journals. He is a major contributor to textbooks like Pathways of the Pulp, Principles and Practice of Endodontics, Endodontic Radiology, Endodontic Microbiology among many others. After decades of being a seasoned lecturer, mentor, and a prolific researcher in Endodontics, he was awarded as Professor Emeritus in 2019.

Among his many awards are Louis Grossman Award of the French Society of Endodontics (2005), Louis I. Grossman Award of the American Association of Endodontists "The award recognizes an author for cumulative publication of significant research studies that have made an extraordinary contribution to endodontology" (2008), W.W. Wood Award of the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry for excellence in dental education (2013), Award of Distinction of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto (2014), I.B. Bender Lifetime Educator Award of the American Association of Endodontists (2018), Life Membership, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Fraternity Tau Tau Chapter (2019).

The Tooth “Implant”: Intentional Replantation and Autogenous Transplantation

When retreatment and apical microsurgery are unfeasible or when infection persists, the tooth is usually extracted and replaced with prosthetic devices. Alternatively, when conditions permit, the tooth can be manipulated after extraction and replanted, or a non-strategic tooth can be transplanted into the socket of the extracted tooth. These seemingly radical but simple procedures offer very good prognosis when the biologic principles of replantation are observed.

The procedures of intentional replantation/transplantation will be presented in contemporary context, as predictable means for retaining “untreatable” teeth for patients’ benefit. Strict guidelines for case selection, a step-by-step protocol and a variety of clinical applications will be outlined and illustrated with typical cases.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe the procedural guidelines for intentional replantation and autogenous transplantation aimed to prevent external root resorption and persistent infection
  • Outline the indications for intentional replantation and autogenous transplantation
  • Summarize the long-term outcomes for intentional replantation and autogenous transplantation

Disinfection in Endodontics: A Crucial Step for Successful Endodontics

The main goal of endodontic therapy is thorough debridement of the entire root canal system followed by a three-dimensional obturation and a final coronal restoration. This presentation will highlight the evidence based protocols to achieve debridement of the root canal system and accomplish the predictable success in treating endodontic cases.

Learning Objectives:

  • To enhance the evidence based knowledge and  skills in managing endodontic cases
  • To understand and apply evidence based protocols in achieving disinfection of the root canal system
