Locating the Missed Canal: Techniques and Strategies

One of the major causes of endodontic treatment failure is the inability to locate and treat all the canals.

Due to the complexities of the root canal system, missed canals are not uncommon during endodontic treatment. Missed canals contains pulp tissue, and at times bacteria and related irritants, which can result to clinical symptoms and endodontic lesion. The literature proves that a large number of endodontic failures is associated with untreated canal space. Familiarization in root canal anatomy, proper access preparation and appropriate armamentarium are some of the ways to decrease the chances of missing a root canal. The identification and treatment of this missed anatomy typically results successful endodontic treatment.

Learning Objectves:

  • To know about the anatomical location and configuration of the canals and its relation in locating the Orifices
  • To inform the clinicians the technique to properly locate the missed canal
  • To know the proper devices and instrumentation that will improve locating the canals
