Endodontic Emergencies: Toothache

Most dental emergencies are endodontic in nature. When a patient is having a toothache, the dentist is called upon to relieve the pain quickly and efficiently. This seminar will investigate the diagnostic procedures needed to accurately determine the source of most toothaches. Using a simplified classification system and based on questionnaires of endodontists over the past five decades, the speaker will describe which treatment modalities should be utilized to handle these emergencies quickly and effectively.

Decision Making in Modern Clinical Endodontics: The Viability of Saving the Natural Dentition — An Evidence Based Approach

The decision as to whether to incorporate an endodontically treated tooth in a periodontal/restorative treatment plan is often difficult and complicated. The availability of other successful treatment alternatives (dental implants) further complicates the issue. Yet, the retention of the natural dentition has many benefits for the patient. Endodontic outcomes and success rates are extremely high given new technologies, treatment modalities, and a better understanding of canal anatomy and the importance of disinfection but are undeniably tied to restorative and periodontal factors. This lecture will focus on the evidence that endodontic therapy (initial therapy, retreatment, and surgical procedures) is still a viable and successful alternative in saving teeth which can be strategically used in a restorative treatment plan. The prognosis for endodontically treated teeth will be considered along with an approach to determine the most appropriate endodontic modalities when considering retaining natural teeth.

Bioceramic Sealers: What’s good, what’s bad, and how do I use them (safely)?

The dental market has been flooded with various types of bioceramic sealers. Many dentists have shifted to using these products as they seem easy to use and are marketed as biocompatible. However, the products from various companies are not identical, with some products marketed as bioceramic being substantially different from the original bioceramic sealers. Furthermore, no dental product is ever absolutely safe. Many bioceramic sealers come as injectable syringes, which may make delivery easier but also means catastrophic extrusion is a potential risk. This presentation will cover the products available on the Philippine market, how they differ, possible pitfalls and how to safely use bioceramic sealers for better patient outcomes.
