Perspectives on the Diagnosis and Management of Teeth/Roots with Structural Defects
Structural defects in teeth/roots, such as crazes, cracks or fractures are major dilemmas in both diagnosis and management. Only too often the dental professional has difficulty in identifying the presence of these defects or the extent of the defect. Many tests can be applied and the use of CBCT have been beneficial in determining the nature of the problem. Management rests with the skilled, astute clinician, and may result in tooth retention or possibly extraction. Both vertical and horizontal defects of this nature will be addressed.
Learning Objectives:
- To identify signs and symptoms suggestive of structural defects in teeth
- To identify the tests that will aid in the identification of these defects
- To determine the extent of the defects using specific tests/tools, such as percussion, transillumination, incremental probings and CBCT
- To develop treatment plans for teeth with structural defects, that may include a wide variety of procedures, such as non-surgical root canal treatment, restorative, surgical management, and extraction

The Dental Operating Microscope in Contemporary Endodontics
The operating microscope greatly enhances a clinician's ability to view small details inside a patient's tooth. By magnifying vision up to 25 times that of the naked eye, the dental microscope is useful in both diagnosis, treatment, patient document and education. Research demonstrates better outcomes compared to treatment without vision enhancement or magnification. Microscopes aid in Endodontics to locate hidden canals, management of complications, perform conventional root canal treatment, re-treatment and surgical endodontics. Moreover, using Dental Operating Microscope improves ergonomics for the clinician. This lecture will included teaching experience from Mahidol Dental Microscope Center, Mahidol University, Thailand.
